Introducing Head Boy & Girl 2008

Hi, we are Teagan Bewick and Michael McGrath and we’re Head Girl and Boy for 2009. We are proud to have been selected to represent our school and look forward to working with the other councillors to continue our School’s excellence. Please feel free to approach us about any issues you feel need to be raised, and we will do our best to have your concerns voiced. We wish you all a fun and productive year for 2009.

From the Principal

A warm welcome to parents, particularly those new to the school community in 2009. The school year has begun in a smooth and positive manner as indicated in my Letter to Parents sent home with students last week. Students and teachers are now well and truly into their course work and the holidays seem a long time ago. Woodvale Senior High School is a very effective school and we pride ourselves on setting high standards in relation to student behaviour, attitude, dress and work ethic. Our goal is to strive to encourage every student to achieve their personal best. This is far more likely to be attained when there is a positive partnership between the student, the parents and the school.

The quality of this partnership is a key reason why Woodvale SHS is such a positive and effective school. The funding contributed to the school over the past few years (mainly through the voluntary P&C contribution) has ensured that our teachers and students have the very best educational resources available to them. The hard work completed by the School Council and P&C will see much needed funding ($3.25 million) begin to flow into renewing some of our aging classrooms and facilities in 2009. Top of the list are new toilets and refurbishing our Home Economics kitchens. We are also awaiting a final decision on funding for a Training Kitchen and Restaurant ($2.5 million) and a new sports facility ($2 million).

The students of Woodvale again achieved commendable Year 12 academic results in 2008 with the Education Minister presenting the school with an award for being one of the best public schools in the state. We were the fourth best government school in terms of proportion of TEE students offered their first choice of University course (77%) and third best in terms of students offered one of their preferences at University (97%). We were judged as being the sixth best government school (11th overall) in terms of Wholly School Assessed (non TEE) subjects. We were also the third best school in terms of the number of subjects ranked as being in the Top 10 Subjects in the state (12). We had one Subject Exhibition winner and nine students receiving Curriculum Council awards.  However, most importantly was the fact that every student successfully graduated. As stated in my recent letter, there will be a full analysis of the Year 12 results published in our annual School Report later this term.

I look forward to a positive and productive year ahead in which our students continue to enjoy their schooling and achieve their personal best.

Education Tax Refund

Last year the Rudd Government announced an Education Tax refund that will provide help to some families to meet some costs associated with schooling, with refunds of up to:

§         $375 per primary school student; and

§         $750 per secondary school student.

All families with school children who receive Family Tax Benefit Part A will be eligible for the Education Tax Refund, which will be paid to families from July 1 this year.

Provided parents keep their receipts, the Education Tax Refund will apply to some of the most common back-to-school items, including:

§         laptops;

§         home computers and associated costs;

§         home internet connections;

§         printers;

§         education software;

§         trade tools for use at school;

§         school text books; and

§         stationery.

Parents will be able to claim 50 per cent of these expenses through their tax return at the end of the financial year.  For those who are not required to complete an income tax return, a separate form will be available from the Australian Taxation Office.

P & C News

I would like to welcome everyone back to the new school year and I would particularly like to welcome all the new families to the school. I hope that everyone had a great holiday. Feedback from the Principal and teachers are that students are all settled in and ready for a very productive year.

You may be aware that we had our AGM on Tuesday, February 10 and I was delighted to see so many new and enthusiastic parents. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in the P&C in 2008 and to thank everyone who has taken on a position in the P&C for 2009. I look forward to working with you all and achieving great things.

The P&C is an integral part of the school and plays a major role in helping the school achieve their goals. In recent years the P&C has contributed generously and regularly to the school and its contributions include: the music centre, air conditioning, shade and shelter, seating, landscaping, computer software, interschool sport, books and equipment, retaining wall for soccer and the Year 12 graduation. All this is made possible by families paying their P&C voluntary contribution and the patronage of both the Uniform Shop and Canteen. Families continuing to pay their P&C contributions are a vital factor if the P&C is going to continue its wonderful work. Also during this time there has been many changes. Department of Education and Training policy on healthy foods and drink in WA Canteens, wages, insurance and price increases from our suppliers have all had an impact. Also our diminishing number of volunteers (more paid staff are needed which eats into our profits). Combined with the downturn in the economic climate, we now find ourselves in a situation where prices have gone up considerably (from our suppliers), which is having a major effect on our profits which severely limits our ability to help the school and will have a huge impact on our students.

If the P&C is an integral part of the school, then the volunteers are the backbone of the P&C. Without them, P&Cs are unable to function and therefore severely limit the wonderful work that can be done. The Canteen is urgently in need of volunteers. To say the situation is critical is an understatement and if volunteers are not available, then measures will have to be taken and its (Canteen)current situation will need to be reviewed, which in turn will have a major impact for our students. If you can help, even if it’s once a term or a couple of times a term, it doesn’t matter as all help is appreciated. Only three hours of your time is needed and lunch is provided. It is also a great way to meet other parents and to get to know your school better.

Please contact Fay French Canteen Manager 9309 0875, who is only too willing to answer any questions you may have.

If you have any questions about matters pertaining to the P&C please feel free to call me on 0418 689107.

Associate Principal (Years 8 & 9)

I just know that this is going to be a fantastic year; I feel it in my bones. The beginning of the academic year reinforced my positivity. Year 8s were all in uniform, the girls had no make up on and their skirts were a decent length. The students smiled at me and were happy to be in our school. A big thank you to parents who are reinforcing our school dress code especially that girl’s skirts and shorts  need to be mid thigh and that boys should not wear low slung baggy shorts. It makes such a difference to the feel of the school to have such a high compliance to our dress code. Teachers new to the school this year have all commented on the high standards that we set and what a positive attitude to school our students demonstrate.

Year 8s have commenced their study skills program with Mrs Cole (their year coordinator) and they will also be learning about their brain and learning style during the term through Health Education classes. We ensure that all our Year 8 and 9 students have a very strong foundation in successful learning through their participation in study skills, organisation skills, emotional intelligence and brain awareness courses. Through such a solid foundation, they will develop their learning skills and we trust, achieve at their personal best.  This is the best preparation for the demands of upper school that we can offer.

I will be holding a Parent Information Evening for Year 8 parents on Wednesday, February 18 in the Music Centre from 7.00 – 8.00pm.  From 8.00 – 8.30pm, Mr Cuenca will be meeting with parents of our Year 8 Academic Extension students. This night will be an opportunity to introduce parents to the student services team and I will speak briefly about how best to support Year 8s in their transition to secondary schooling. Mrs Virginia McNamara will also talk briefly about the role of the Parents and Citizens Association at Woodvale. I look forward to meeting our Year 8 parents. If you are new to the school with a child in another year group you are also welcome to attend.

Another aspect of my role in the school is to communicate with parents about wider school issues. Please feel free to contact me with any celebrations or concerns. However, please understand that the process for feedback about teachers in the school is that you have first contacted the teacher, then you have contacted the Head of Learning Area. I should be a final point of contact if you feel that issues are still not resolved. Happily most of the feedback I have received over the years has been about the outstanding teaching and learning that occurs in this very fine school of ours.

Associate Principal (Year 10)

This year I have accepted the position of Year 10 Associate Principal, taking over the role from Mr John Stone. I am looking forward to working with the Year 10 students and hope to see as many students as possible achieve personal goals and school success.

Year 10 is a very important period in the lives of our students. Throughout the year students will be expected to make decisions that will affect their adult lives. To assist them, Woodvale staff and I will be guiding students through a number of major events. These include Year 10 Semester Exams, career awareness activities, Year 11 selection nights, interviews and other workshops where required.

At the recent Year 10 Assembly I offered the students a challenge: to make the most of Year 10 – to work hard, to study for tests and to set themselves attainable goals. I emphasised to them that they are moving into a phase in their school lives that becomes very competitive. Placements for special programs, for example INSTEP, are at a premium and not all students applying can be successful. Diligence, sound study habits and good organisation are vital for future success.

All the best for ’09 Year 10s.

The Community Service Program (Years 10, 11 and 12)   is now compulsory for Year 12 WACE graduation.

The Community Service Program is well underway with students volunteering in the community as well as some Year 10 host students who have volunteered to help the school administration for a day. It has been a delight to have students come to see me voluntarily with ideas and suggestions for how they would like to gain their community service hours. Congratulations to those students who spent time over the holidays completing their hours. It is our hope that all Year 10 students will have earned their Certificate in Community Service by the end of this year.

All students must complete a minimum of 20 Community Service hours to be eligible for the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), ie graduation. Community service activities can be either school-orientated within the school environment or community-orientated occurring off the school campus. All proposals for community service must be approved by the school. Further information, guides and suggestions for community service activities will be sent home and Year 10 students will receive booklets for recording their hours shortly.

What qualifies as Community Service?

Supervised activities that qualify as community service should:

·         be for the benefit of others;

·         give service in an area of need;

·         provide opportunities for learning and self reflection;

·         not involve payment

·         be direct involving personal contact with the person being served (assisting or tutoring     others etc)

·         OR indirect (fundraising, environmental clean-ups etc).

We have a range of school-organised activities planned, but we are keen for parents and community members to inform us of other opportunities that they feel would qualify as community service for our current Year 10 and Year 11 students. This could be volunteer work or fundraising for non-profit organisations such as aged care, animal welfare, child care, environment etc; volunteer work like garden maintenance, visiting hospitals or senior citizens; participating in projects run by Scouts/Guides/Surf Lifesaving Clubs/Church Groups etc that help others. If you know of any similar activities we would appreciate your help.

Associate Principal (Year 11-12)

Woodvale has again proven itself to be an excellent school and the school of choice for the surrounding suburbs! The results of the 2008 Year 12 group are a credit to the students, their parents and the wonderful teachers we have. We achieved 100 per cent graduation for the second year in a row and as described in Mr Leech’s article, we were one of the top schools in getting our students into University. Our TEE Dux, Amy Patterson, scored a TER of 97.45. Amy, Pierra Brown, Chelsey Flatt and Danielle Keen all gained at least 10 A grades and thus were awarded Certificates of Excellence. Certificates of Distinction (for being in the top 0.5% of candidates) were awarded to Chloe Ironmonger (Earth & Environmental Science), Shenae Van Eyk (Health Studies), Jessica Seculovic and Kacey Reader (both for Childcare). Kacey also received the Subject Exhibition for Childcare for being the top student in the state – Congratulations! Further information will be published in our Annual Report.

My role is largely to focus on Year 11 and 12. I will be working with staff and students so that together we are able to achieve the best possible educational outcome for each student. Speaking recently to the Year 11 and 12s I emphasised the importance of students firstly studying courses which are matched to their abilities and interests and secondly maintaining focus on goals and putting in the appropriate effort with the aim of achieving “personal bests” for every assessment. I have set the challenge to our students of achieving 100 per cent graduation for the third year running and if we all play our part I believe we can do it. For this to happen it is essential that all Year 12s have completed their 20 hours of Community Service, for if they don’t, they will not graduate. They have had the last two years to achieve this and it can be put off no longer. Please see Ms Clark (Program Coordinator Administration Support) for information on how to meet this requirement. It is such an important issue that the school has decided that only Year 12 students who have completed a minimum of 15 hours will receive an invitation to the 2009 School Ball. Students who do not meet this requirement will have the option of completing a proposal form outlining why they have not yet met the requirements and a plan of how they will meet the requirement for the minimum 15 hours to be completed before the Ball. The likelihood of success of the plan will influence the school’s final decision. If the plan is approved then the student will receive an invitation to the Ball. Students will then be required to ensure they have completed the 20 hours by the end of Semester 1. Among other things, the Good Standing policy covers areas such as students maintaining satisfactory academic performance. This includes meeting graduation requirements with things such as submitting assessments and completing Community Service hours.

Our focus on both personal and academic excellence continues through the enhancement of our upper school Wednesday afternoon program. The Term 1 plan was given to students on the first day of term and is also included in this newsletter (see next page). A lot more testing is being included in the program this year. The clear expectation is that all upper school students will attend contact on Wednesdays and will also attend the relevant planned activities when they occur. On the Wednesdays when they have the privilege to leave after contact, the intention is that they go home to study and catch up on school work – not to waste time!

A significant part of the assessment in TEE subjects comes from exams. As such, a diligent approach to revising material and practicing under exam conditions is important. I will write to all families of Year 11 and 12 students in the near future but would like to remind people now of the exam times for this year. Please ensure that students are available to sit these exams, family holidays etc are generally not an acceptable reason to miss an exam.

All upper school students should have received a copy of the 2009 Woodvale SHS diary. It has received many favourable comments from students, staff and parents. Please read the policies in the front of the diary and make sure the appropriate sections have been signed. It is an ideal way for students to organise themselves by recording their homework and assessments each night. The yellow calendar at the start of each term should be used to record the due dates for each assessment. This birds-eye view will aid in time management. Parents are encouraged to regularly look through the diary as a way of keeping track of how their son/daughter is going.

Best wishes for a successful, happy and productive year

International Program

Welcome to our new students

The school year started with many new students to the school, including 13 new International students who join the 13 students continuing our program, which commenced late 2006.

Some of the students have joined our Intensive English Program that targets International Full Fee Paying students who are new English Language learners. Thank you to all the many students and staff who have welcomed the students and have helped and have been getting to know the international students as they meet the many challenges of bridging the gap between languages and cultures, so far from their homes and  families. Their families have expressed their appreciation of everyone’s contribution.

We have an interesting variety of countries represented: Malaysia, Indonesia, China, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Macedonia, Germany, Switzerland, England, Japan and Singapore.

Basketball Program Parent Committee AGM

The AGM will be held on Monday February 23 2009 at 7.30pm in the school staff room. All families in the Basketball program are invited to attend.

Welcome to Year 8 and other new students. We hope the students and Basketball staff enjoy their year in the program and we look forward to success in the 2009 carnivals and tours.

For more information please contact Prue Ward at wardfamily@iinet.net.au or on 9408 1689.

Home Economics Department

Year 12 students start their playgroup on Friday, February 20, from 11.25am until 12.30pm. The playgroup will be held in Home Economics Room 4 at Woodvale Senior High School.

Students are responsible for planning, organising and evaluating activities for the children.  Each week there will be play dough, colouring or painting and three activities of the students’ choice. There will be quite a few painting activities.  The children will wear aprons but please do not send them in their best clothes just in case they get paint on themselves.  There will be storytelling, dancing, singing, an indoor sand pit and toys to play with.

During playgroup the children will be served morning tea.  If they have their own water bottle it would be helpful for them to bring this along. Please make sure that it is labelled with their name and advise us if your child has a particular allergy. There will be a weekly charge of $2 per child. This will cover the cost of morning tea and craft activities.

This is a very valuable experience for our students and one which could not occur without the involvement of your children. We appreciate your participation greatly and welcome any advice that you may have for the students as they develop their playgroup.

Once your child feels comfortable with the students, please feel free to leave your child if you would like to. If you would prefer to stay, we are very happy to have your company.

When parking at the school, could you please park in the turning circle at the front of the school or in the small car park as you come down the driveway at entry A (Canteen and Design and Technology) of the school. All staff have allocated parking spaces in each of the other car parks.

I can be contacted on 9309 0826 if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to seeing you for lots of fun at playgroup.

Year 10 Easy Entertaining

Valentine’s Day has now passed and this class of very industrious students made Valentine Cakes. They all learnt the art of making a true sponge cake and most were successful, many worthy of entering into the Royal Agricultural Show. The students then decorated their cakes to take home. I don’t think many actually went to valentines!  Well done guys a great effort.

Veterinary Studies 2009

Last year’s success stories:

Congratulations to all students who completed their Certificate II in Animal Studies in 2008.  By now they would have received their certificate from TAFE. Our congratulations go to Lani Jakovich, Year 12 2008, who successfully applied for a place in the Certificate IV course in Veterinary Nursing at Swan TAFE.

What is Veterinary Studies?

Many students in Years 8, 9 and 10 know that Woodvale runs a Veterinary Studies course, but often are unaware of what is offered in the program.

Veterinary Studies is a stand alone Vocational Educational and Training course where students work toward attaining a Certificate II in Animal studies (RUV04). Students undergo 120 hours of workplace training at one of the Vetwest Animal Hospital clinics where they obtain training in industry specific skills. Underpinning knowledge and theory is covered at school. Swan TAFE (Bentley campus) awards the final certificate. It provides an excellent opportunity for students interested in animal care to fast track into the industry, or apply for the Certificate IV course at TAFE. It is important to remember that this course also counts toward high school graduation.

Vetwest to continue training

We are very lucky to have Vetwest Animal Hospitals as our training provider again in 2009.  The success of our students can be directly attributed to the excellent standard of instruction and training they receive from the Vetwest staff.

Edgewater Veterinary Clinic

We are very pleased to announce that Edgewater Veterinary Clinic has agreed to assist in the training of our students. The first Year 12 students will commence work there early this term. Thanks to Edgewater Vets for their support and interest in our program.

2009 Veterinary Studies intake

Year 11 students have already made a solid start to the year and are eagerly awaiting their training practice at Vetwest. Year 12s are working toward completing their certificates by the end of the academic year.  Good luck to you all.

Major Performances from Term 4 2008

Joondalup Mayoral Prayer Breakfast – City of Joondalup

Jazz Encounter had the privilege of performing at this very prestigious event on November 5 at Joondalup Resort. Mayor Troy Pickard had invited us with our day beginning very early at 5:30am. The guest speaker was former tennis champion Margaret Court (Pastor).

Wanneroo Agricultural Show

Once again the Symphonic Winds and Jazz Encounter were asked to perform at the opening of the Wanneroo Show held on the weekend of November 29. Congratulations to all involved as this was always going to be a difficult gig considering the new ensembles’ had only 7 rehearsals to prepare. Well done to all involved in particular the vocal and instrumental soloists.

Premier’s Award Breakfast

The biggest performance for the term occurred at the Premiers Awards Breakfast on December 8 at Burswood International Resort. This prestigious event celebrated the highest achievements by teachers and lecturers throughout the state. Our Clarinet Ensemble welcomed all the guests and our Percussion Ensemble opened the ceremony. After many presentations and speeches the Senior Choir then closed the ceremony. Congratulations to all students and staff who were involved – very well done!

Design & Technology Department

Students in Year 8 are given a taster course in Design & Technology with 6 – 10 weeks in Metalwork and/or Woodwork. In Metalwork students are making a memo pad holder, a very handy item to have next to the phone. In Woodwork students are making a puzzle, a challenging brain teaser for all the family to try.

Woodvale SHS Merit Reward Program

2009 marks the second year of our Merit Reward Program.

During the Semester many of Woodvale’s students will be bringing home Merit Point slips which will be given to students who exhibit the behaviours that encourage a strong learning environment. Slips will be given out with specific point allocations for things such as assignment completion, general positive attitude, representing the school, using homework diaries, uniform and punctuality.

Once a student accumulates the specific point targets of 20, 35 and 50 points they will receive a certificate, a letter of recognition from the Principal and a movie voucher. In 2008 over 100 students achieved these significant milestones. In addition to these, prizes will also be awarded to students who achieve significant milestones in recognition of their hard work. During the year there will also be a series of lunches held for students that obtain point levels as well as raffles and auctions that students can use their points to enter.

Student Services

Year 8

2009 has started on a positive note for Year 8. Feedback from staff indicates that students are polite, well mannered and very well behaved. This is great to hear! I am also delighted to see that students are consistently wearing correct school uniform and that make-up and jewellery have been kept to a minimum.

This year I have been allocated extra time to work exclusively with Year 8 students.  My main area of focus is students with literacy or organisational problems, or problems simply settling into high school.

Some of the ways in which I help these students include:

·         Working with individuals and small groups in the classroom to assist with research and presentation of assignments.

·         Withdrawing individual students who are struggling with a particular task, and working with them on a one to one basis.

·         Working with students who are totally disorganised, and spending time organising their files, bags & pencil cases, etc.  Once they are back on track I touch base with them  once a week to see that they are staying organised.

·         Devising individualised homework programs for those students who do not study or complete homework and liaising with teachers and parents to ensure the program is adhered to.

I am conducting “Study Skills” seminars with Year 8 students during their Health Education classes.  In these sessions I focus on organisation; effective use of the homework diary; the importance of developing – and sticking to – a study plan, and time management. One of the major problems that many students face is a total lack of organisation.  For some students their lack of organisation has led to poor results in the classroom and assessments. Some of the problems encountered are:

·         Work for all learning areas placed randomly in their file or their bag; no separate sections for each subject.  Consequently important assessment sheets or course outlines are lost.

·         Students are not regularly cleaning out their files and removing old schoolwork.

·         Lack of paper to use if they need to hand in a short classroom activity.

·         Files are too small to cope with the volume of material.  Many students like to use the ‘college’ type spiral notebooks, but they are not suitable, as they do not have enough space and are difficult to maintain.

·         Too many files. This adds extra weight to already heavy bags.

What Parents Can Do To Help

You can help your child to stay organised by:

·         Checking their file and bag nightly or weekly.  In this way any ‘stray’ handouts can be filed in the appropriate section and supplies of paper and so on can be checked.

·         Students’ files take a ‘battering’ throughout the term.  They go in and out of their bags up to seven times a day.  A broken file is often the consequence.  This is the reason I recommend only purchasing the black lever arch files as they are very reasonably priced and easy to replace. Please check that your child’s file is in good working order.

·         Keep a generous supply of file paper and plastic sheets at home so students can fill up their files as they run out.  It is also a great idea to keep a couple of spare lever arch files, as well as a supply of red and blue pens and lead pencils.

·         Check and sign your child’s diary on a weekly basis

How to contact me:

If you would like to make an appointment with me to discuss your child’s progress at school, or if you would like advice about how to organise your child by setting him/her up with a homework routine, please call me on 9309 0882 or email me at pcole@woodvale.wa.edu.au.  If you have any concerns about your child’s performance in specific subjects, I advise you to make contact with the subject teacher as soon as possible via a phone call, or email.  I am happy to forward any emails to the appropriate staff member.

Year 11

Year 11s have settled in well to what can be a challenging year. After the thorough subject selection process which involved parent nights and subject counselling, many students have chosen subjects that will take them on a pathway through senior school to either the work environment, TAFE or University. This makes Year 11 very different to Year 10 in that students have chosen subjects that they want to be in.

For a small number of students, Year 11 presents its challenges in a number of areas. For some their friends have moved on to the work environment or they might find that the behaviour and academic expectations of Woodvale SHS are difficult to meet. Others have difficulty making the adjustment to the study and assessment requirements of their courses. I urge all students and parents to contact the school if problems arise before they become more difficult to solve.

Last year, when this group was in Year 10, we had one of the lowest rates of unexplained absences, uniform infringements and discipline reports in the school. I would like to thank all parents and students for supporting the goals of the school in these areas. A reminder however to students that last year’s policy of two or more uniform or unexplained lates to school will mean a lunchtime detention. This also applies to facial jewellery.

The major social event for Year 11 is the River Cruise which will be held in November. This is an event that many students look forward to. The annual pizza lunches to welcome the year group back to school also begin soon.

As I mentioned to the year group during the first few days I look forward to shaking hands with them at graduation night in 2010 but not to forget that the path to get there begins this year.

Health Centre

Year 8 Parents

For students with a health condition which may require emergency treatment (ie peanut allergy, bee sting allergy, asthma mild to serious) an ‘emergency action plan’ is available.  Parents of these students have been posted forms to complete and return to the school nurse as soon as possible.

All students Years 9 - 12 who develop a medical/health problem need to notify the school nurse especially if they are taking medication or have a potentially life-threatening disorder. It is a requirement of DET and DOH that all these students must have a current action plan before they are permitted to attend an excursion, camp or tour.

Health Screening   (vision, hearing, scoliosis)

Health screening is not normally carried out at high school, but if you have any concerns with your child’s health please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss the problem. If I cannot assist there is a large network of resources available to students and parents.

St John Ambulance Fund

While I am on the subject of emergencies, are you aware an ambulance trip from school to Joondalup Medical Campus costs about $500? Joining this fund for a family costs $60 per year, but some private health funds include St John membership.

Hope your year is a happy and healthy one.

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop has a good stock of:

Girls’ skirts: Be aware of length regulations – for the 4 pleat skirts they must be mid-thigh above the knee.

Short fashion shorts with cuffs, tabs or buttons ARE NOT part of the uniform.

There were a lot of customers on our first day before school on Thursday, January 29 and people waited for a long time patiently in the queues. On Friday, January 30 there was only a very short queue and customers were served quickly. Remember unless you have to come the first day (ie because of work commitments or appointments), it is better to wait until the afternoon or come Friday or Monday, as there is a much shorter waiting time.

There are 5 people on roster most of the time. It is a very big job and more volunteers would ease the strain for next year.  If you wish to volunteer please contact me at the Uniform Shop on 9309 0876. I would certainly appreciate your help!

Ski Trip 2009

As with previous years, I would like to offer students at Woodvale Senior High School an opportunity to participate in a Snow Ski / Snow Board excursion to Mount Hotham in Victoria during the July school holidays in 2009.  The snow trip is not a school excursion as such, but is conducted as a private tour through Morcombe Travel.

Date:               Depart Perth on Friday July 10, returning on Friday July 17.

Location:         Mount Hotham, Victoria.

Cost:               Approximately $2200 (to be confirmed)

Included:          Return airfares (Perth – Melbourne – Perth)

Return coach transport (Melbourne – Hotham – Melbourne)

Accommodation in the snowfields in a private lodge

Ski hire, lift passes and lessons

Breakfast, lunch and dinner each day

                        Insurance

Snowboard hire instead of ski hire.

Not Included:   Clothing hire (approximately $50 per week)

The Woodvale group will be combining with several other Perth schools to form a travelling group of approximately 150 skiers.

If you wish to attend the ski trip, a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit of $100 (cheques made payable to Morcombe Travel - NOT Woodvale Senior High School) is required. Please return deposits to Mr Browner, not Morcombe Travel. The deposit will be paid immediately to Morcombe Travel to secure airfares and accommodation, hence it is NON-REFUNDABLE if you decide not to go.

Numbers are limited and Year 10, 11 and 12 students will have preference when allocating places. Any student who has “good standing” issues at school will not be eligible.

Basketball Program Coordinator

International soccer comes to the northern suburbs!

On Thursday February 12, Year 10 students braved 40 degree heat in an international game against Cardinal Heenan Catholic Sports School on tour from Liverpool, England. While the heat took its toll on our International visitors, the spirit and competitive nature of the game wasn’t lacking!

The day was set up as a seven-a-side competition with local schools invited to compete.  These included Clarkson, Ocean Reef, Balcatta, Kinross and of course Woodvale’s Year 10 Soccer Excellence students.

In a close game against our international guests, Woodvale scored the all important goal to triumph 1-0. Going on to be undefeated for the day, we unfortunately drew 3 games to finish second overall.

Woodvale’s top goal scorer for the day was Liam McGurk (5), with Harri Cherry, Luke Clark, Robert Sharif and Adam Lagana scoring one each.

Congratulations to all players for their efforts and the way they presented themselves throughout the day, they were a credit to the program and we look forward to making this an annual event.

It’s School Photo Day!

Monday March 9 2009             (Year 8 & 11)

&

Tuesday 10 March 10 2009 (Years 9, 10 & 12)

Dear Parents and Students,

School photo day is coming! Approximately two weeks prior to the photo day every student will receive an envelope for his / her order and payment. Parents are asked to select the photographs they require and return the envelope to the school on the photography day with payment included. Please ensure correct change is placed in envelopes, as our photographers, the school office and the canteen cannot give change.

Students will be asked to return their envelope directly to the photographer on the day at the time of their portrait being taken, along with a student bar-coded Identification Card which will be supplied to the student by the school. If a student is not ordering any photos, the Identification Card must STILL be returned to the photographer as the student’s portrait is being taken.

Wow-wee! School Photography guarantees a total refund for any parent who is not fully satisfied with their photos. All students will be photographed individually on photo day for school administration records.

REMEMBER – every student must return their OWN envelope even if payments for siblings are enclosed within the one envelope. Any questions? Please contact the Wow-wee! office directly on 9240 6760

Student Council

The Year 9 and 10 representatives for your Student Council were selected at the end of last year. Students had to nominate for a position and were then appointed based on their application and performance around the school. These students should be commended for their selection!

The main role of the lower school student council is to provide a link between students and staff in regards to issues around the school. They also coordinate and conduct whole school fundraisers for worthy charities and appeals. Given the recent tragedy of the Victorian Bushfires, we would like our first fundraising effort to raise a significant amount of money to contribute to families who have lost their homes and loved ones as a result of these devastating fires.

This student council would also like to make it their project to improve the quality of the toilets around the school by reducing graffiti and vandalism, and making them more hygienic. If you have any concerns about any issues around the school, please approach your student councillors so they can raise these concerns for discussion at meetings throughout the year.

Danielle Priestly

Lower School Student Council Coordinator
