Vocal Students Perform at Crown Theatre

The Music Department at Woodvale SC has been a hive of activity this term! On Monday 28 August 2017, the College’s Junior Choir (Year 7 and Year 8 students) performed at a WA Government Schools Music Society concert at the Crown Theatre. The 55 voice choir performed two songs, ‘Hey Soul Sister’ and ‘Riptide’. Their performance was warmly received by the near-capacity audience. In addition to the choir, Woodvale SC also provided vocal soloists for the evening.

Reward Afternoon - Last Day of 2016

Students were treated to an afternoon of fun with a dunk tank, boxing ring complete with oversized gloves, gladiator game, adrenaline rush, cool dude surfboard, bucking bull, velcro icky stick wall and a slam dunk ring. Some students chose to relax in the shade with their boost juices whilst others chatted with teachers in the sun. Year 9 Academic Enrichment Science Excursion to Harry Perkins Institute BioDiscovery Centre

On Monday 5 December the Year 9 Science AE class visited the BioDiscovery Centre at the Harry Perkins Institute. Students had the opportunity to enrich their classroom studies on Biology by working with leading medical researchers. They were highly engaged in laboratory techniques involved in diagnosing diabetes, utilising technology (including glucose meters, an ELIZA protocol and spectrophotometry) to determine glucose and insulin levels in patient samples. Using the digital technologies they analysed patient samples and arrived at possible treatment plans. Students gained an insight into medical research as a future career path and had a tour of the world renowned research facilities.

Elemental Scales – WSC Dragon is taking shape!

Our fourth workshop on 8 December saw us 'dressing' Elemental with scales - a huge task, given he is yet to be fully measured in length (though it seems he will be over 8 metres long). The scales, made of colourful soft plastic, are to cover his rattan structure and will be beautifully set to life with lights and movement for the City of Joondalup Display in early April, before being displayed at the College.

The Learning Resource Centre was converted into Woodvale’s very own ‘Scitech’ and was buzzing with excitement as students from the Young Einstein program attended their end of year showcase. WSC Lantern Workshop Progress

The second Workshop to make our dragon saw a flurry of activity. It was great to see the parts taking shape and our dragon growing by the minutes, complete with LED lights attached to his enormous head. Our dragon has been tentatively named Elemental, representing his link to the Chinese elements. Work started on the scales which will be made of soft plastic in a range of colours that will be attached to the rattan frame. Our work continues over the next few weeks.

Chinese and Japanese Top Achievers

It is clear that knowing an Asian Language is one thing that may offer our students the edge in the work place and in other life opportunities, as well as having many other benefits. To this end, top students in Years 9 and 10 were offered a special lunch in which they were given a presentation on the benefits of continuing their studies of Japanese and Chinese into senior school. This included outlining the benefits, particularly through screening interviews of successful career-minded people who are testaments to the importance of learning an Asian Language and learning about Asian cultures. Specific benefits of continuing to study an Asian Language at the College were outlined.

Congratulations to our Year 12 Mathematics Specialist class for their performance in the 2016 Australian Mathematics Competition. For many of these students this year culminates five years of participation in the prestigious competition. We look forward to the results for the Year 7 to 11 students who also sat the test. This year students from Years 7 to 12 were given the opportunity to participate in the state wide netball competition ‘The Champions Cup’. This involved a large number of both public and private schools from all around the Western Australia competing at a day carnival at Kingsway Netball Centre (Term 1). Woodvale Secondary College had nine teams competing in this competition and all girls performed well on the day. The stand out performers were our Year 7/8 ‘A’ division and our Year 9/10 ‘A’ division teams who were undefeated all day and finished top of their zone.

The whole school assembly held on the last Friday of Term 2 was a positive way to end Semester 1 2016. The Year 12 Hospitality course requires students to complete a number of service functions over two years. These include café service, coffee service and catering for functions. Woodman Point Music Camp 2016

On 15 May 2016, Woodvale Secondary College’s junior music ensembles had the opportunity to spend three days and two nights at Woodman Point. Students enjoyed taking part in various activities such as archery, flying fox, geocaching and other team building exercises which strengthened relationships between all students. In conjunction with these activities, the camp included opportunities for each ensemble to practise and polish pieces for the upcoming Semester 1 concert and primary school visits. These camps are also designed to prepare students for Senior Music Tours in the near future.

We would like to welcome exchange teacher Mr Yoshihiro Kiyosawa, who is participating in the 2016 Hyogo Teacher Exchange Program. Mr Kiyosawa will join the Languages Learning Area and is looking forward to working with students and staff at the College. Woodvale Exceed Expectations at Interschool Athletics

On Monday 19 October, Woodvale Secondary College competed in the Western Australian State School Sports C Division Interschool Athletics Carnival held at the WA Athletics Stadium. Many of the students selected for the team were required to fill in events on the day which they hadn’t nominated for. Woodvale Secondary College achieved third place in the carnival, not only successfully avoiding relegation, but earning an elevation to B division. This result is a major achievement and a true reflection of the attitude and commitment shown by all the students who attended the carnival.
