Independent Public Schools – Have your say….
As you may be aware, much discussion has been happening in the media and at both school and system levels around the concept of “Independent Public Schools”. The Department of Education and Training (DET) are looking to trial this concept in 2010 with 30 schools, drawing from both primary and high schools across a range of socio-economic areas. The various flexibilities offer the chance for schools to operate more efficiently in a number of areas.
Woodvale SHS, particularly, could benefit if we were selected as part of the initial trial. Schools selected will not have to adopt all of the flexibilities (in fact doing that would probably not be recommended) but could choose which ones they would like to start with and add some more if they desired in subsequent years. The areas of curriculum, staffing, student services and the ability to manage our own faults are some of the areas which look very interesting for our school.
The school leadership and staff are currently involved in exploring these issues with a view to putting in an application to be a trial school for 2010. We have conducted meetings with some of our feeder primary schools and the Woodvale SHS School Council has also been exploring the issues. We encourage the support of our parents as part of this process. We have attached links to two documents that will help explain things further. One is a pdf document from DET and the other has been put together by the school from various Q&A on the DET website. The school welcomes parent feedback. Expressions of Interest close with DET on Monday 7 September 2009.
