WOODVALE SHS – A PLACE TO LEARN
At Woodvale Senior High School for the Curriculum to be meaningful the following context is provided :
- a stimulating and interactive community.
- an acceptance of individual differences and potential.
- a willingness to provide appropriate teaching methods to match those differences.
The curriculum taught :
- resembles the modules being studied and may include reports, stories, plays, art work, demonstrations in a range of media.
- allows solutions to real problems, especially related to students’ ‘local environment’.
- are evaluated by an appropriate audience and by the students.
- demonstrate a transformation of information which is based on the collection and analysis of original data rather than a summary of other’s research.
At Woodvale Senior High
we take pride in the Learning Environment which is characterised by
variety, flexibility, more and varied resources, warmth and trust,
non-threatening situations for testing views, risk taking and promotion
of creative and divergent thinking in an aesthetic surrounding.
Renzulli’s Enrichment Trial Model is embraced so that teachers can
provide programs that are qualitatively different. Activities are
designed to provide students with as wide a range of experiences as
possible (excursions, visiting speakers, club, brainstorming sessions),
develop thinking and feeling skills (creative and critical thinking,
learning how to learn, using advanced level reference materials,
communicating effectively) and apply the knowledge and skills they have
developed to become investigators of real problems by conducting
individual and small group investigation (researching surveying
debating, making a presentation, writing a journal article, producing a
play or book.)
At Woodvale Senior High our teachers bring to their classes their vast experiences. Our programs are organised and conducted by the Key teachers in conjunction with Head of Learning Areas with various personnel such as Resource Teachers, Teacher Librarians, Computer Specialists and Laboratory Technicians assisting with the programs. Our Academic record speaks volumes when one looks at the Academic Honour Board which is made up of students from the Program. The Head Boy and the Head Girl chosen by the teachers and students normally have gone through the Academic Extension Program.
