Singaporean Visitors
November 30th saw the influx of 11 boys, accompanied with two teachers from Northbrooks Senior High School, Singapore.
It was a study tour for the boys, aged 15-18, most of whom have just graduated from their school. The teachers, accompanied by a tour guide from Singapore who organises study tours, were also keen to learn about the school and our education system.
The day started with a meeting and a tour of the school, in which the visitors were impressed with our school grounds and facilities and by the welcoming and friendly nature of our staff and students. The students were also ‘buddied’ with some of our Year 10 students so they had someone to show them around at recess and lunchtime.
Recess was followed by an innovative Maths lesson in zones 4 and 5 with Mrs Cyndy Jones’ Year 10 Maths class. It involved two major activities: exploring rates and ratios in a fun way - making (and eating!) chocolate crackles; and an interactive problem solving game in which they needed to solve a series of clues class members gradually revealed from clue cards they had been given. A local photojournalist captured the experience so it will be for all to see in the Wanneroo Times or Joondalup News soon.
The visitors had more than they bargained for lunch, in the form of a delicious, very Australian, sausage sizzle fundraiser for the Geelong Basketball tour (“Do you have this every lunchtime?!”) as well as visits from their ‘buddies’ and other friends they had gathered along the way - most of whom were girls!
Lunch also saw the exchange of gifts between the schools. The school was presented with a beautiful mosaic made by one of Northbrooks students. It is currently on display in the administration foyer on our new jarrah gift cabinet and will be on show in other areas of the school next year.
After lunch the boys either had fun with Mr David Hopkins’ Year 10 class playing ‘Murder Ball’ in the gym or with Mr Quilty’s Year 10 Woodwork class for girls in which they produced a jarrah clock in record time.
We were equally impressed with the boys and their teachers, as they were with our school and hope that the connection between the schools grows in the future, in the form of future study tours and by welcoming more Singaporean students into our International Program.
