State Baseball Champions - Woodvales "Mighty Ducks"
The 2009 version of Woodvale’s baseball team was made up of two basketballers, two cricketers, a footballer and four actual baseballers. The team was entered into the A division of Champion Schools Baseball. They managed to win their way through the preliminary rounds and into stage 2 of the competition.
The second stage involved playing a couple of baseball specialist schools. Our first game in stage 2 was against John Septimus Roe. Woodvale made a bright start and had an early four-run lead which was whittled back to one by some solid JSR hitting. We held the one-run advantage and moved into the semi finals against South Fremantle, a great game to watch with both teams possessing pitchers who generated frightening pace. Woodvale were again able to hold onto a narrow lead to win. The victory set up a grand final showdown against Willeton SHS who are a baseball specialist school. The game was played under lights and Woodvale started the encounter as firm underdogs. Coach Waldock gave a stirring pre game speech that had everyone in earshot covered in goose bumps. Either that or the chilly autumn air took the scantly clad by surprise. The game commenced with Woodvale dominating the early innings only to be pegged back late in the game. The players showed great character and fought on to a memorable win in front of a solid but shivering crowd.
Thanks to the parents, friends and family members who attended the game to support the team. Special thanks to Ray Waldock who gave up his free time to coach the boys. His expertise and calming influence was appreciated by all (especially me).
Finally thanks to the players who not only played great baseball but enhanced Woodvale’s reputation through their exceptional behaviour and sportsmanship.
