Careers & VET

As part of the Student Services team we have a Career and VET Coordinator whose role is, essentially, to ensure that students have a successful transition from school to employment, further training or education. The following activities are coordinated by the VET Coordinator at WSC:

Careers Counselling:

Students have access to the services of a Careers counsellor who has information relating to opportunities in employment and post school training through Universities, TAFE and private training organisations. A focus on Career investigation occurs in Year 10 through a number of Learning Areas. Students also have access to Jiig Cal – Career Voyage software package designed to analyse personal interests and recommend career pathways based on individual responses. Appointments can be made and parents are welcome to attend.

Library career corner:
Our school library has a selection of resources available for students to use when investigating their future options. These resources include university handbooks, course guides and private training organisation publications as well as reference material relating to job roles and expectations and job seeking skills.

Offered to Year 11 and / or Year 12 students. Students have the opportunity to experience two placements per year. They attend the workplace each Wednesday where they are trained and assessed by the employer. Students also complete Workplace Learning as a subject which relates to identifying personal skills and relating them to workplace choices.
Certificate Courses:
WSC has a variety of Certificate courses available for Year 11 and Year 12 students. These are nationally accredited and recognised by all training organisations. We have established partnerships with Registered Training Organisations who oversee the delivery and Certification of these courses. Units for completion of these courses contribute to WA Certificate of Education (WACE).
Alternative options:
Through our links in the community, we have access to a range of alternative education options that may be preferred by some students. These include alternative training options as well as educational organisations. We also have connections within the local community who provide employment and training opportunities for WSC students through Work Experience as well as full time employment.
Trade Training Centre:
A new facility available to WSC students is the Hospitality Training Centre. This will provide the opportunity for students to be skilled in an industry area that is thriving.
TAFE links:
Students have the opportunity to access VET for Schools programs at TAFE colleges across the metropolitan area. These courses are offered on a one day a week basis and provide students with the opportunity to start their training in an alternative venue whilst still gaining graduation from WSC.
