Twilight Lantern Parade

After months in the making in after school workshops, break times and holidays, our College dragon, Elemental, was certainly in his element in Saturday night’s Joondalup Twilight Parade, beautifully lit up with LED lights and supported by 15 students.

Elemental did a good job in interacting with the crowd too with lots of high fives much to the delight of thousands of spectators. We had the biggest and brightest lantern by far- and we think the best! See attached photos. Leading us in one of the photos is my niece (left) and Karen Vardy’s daughter (right), so it was a real family affair. Emily Price is making a video of the event, which I’ll place on P: drive. City of Joondalup will put a video up of the parade on their site as well.

The students, staff and families who came along were extremely supportive and proud, and we very much impressed the crowd and also the judges- we won the Best Design award. A quotable quote from a boy in the crowd, “I can’t wait until I get into Year 8.” (A year 7/primary school child?) Parents all commented on how this has been such a fantastic experience for our students in the lead up, as well as on the night itself.

We’ve already thanked our artist, Calvin Chee (fully sponsored by City of Joondalup), who did a fantastic job supporting us. Thanks for the staff who showed their support, coming along and/or attending some workshops. Thanks also to Art staff for after school use of the Art room and to the canteen ladies for afternoon snacks at the workshops.

We plan to display Elemental overhead in the library.
