The College has two Cadets programs students can join, Woodvale Emergency Cadets and Surf Cadets. 

Woodvale Emergency Cadets

Woodvale Emergency Cadets has been operating for over 10 years and provides students with leadership opportunities and teaches them a wide range of emergency service skills.  


The Cadets have achieved success in Community Service Awards and Emergency Services of the Year awards. Membership is open to Years 7 (over the age of 12) to Year 12 students from the College.  


The unit meets every Monday except public holidays between 15:30 and 17:30 and participants take part in a range of curriculum including: 

    • First aid and emergency care 
    • Radio communication 
    • Fire safety and basic fire fighting 
    • Search and rescue techniques 
    • Boating and water safety 
    • Map reading and navigation. 
    • Field craft and camping 
    • Leadership and instructional training. 


The unit takes part in several camps and excursions each year and in the past has visited Harvey, Dwellingup, Toodyay, Albany and Hillarys. 

The unit is supported by Department for Communities and our host organisation is the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Most costs are covered by a grant from the state government, but parents are asked to contribute some payment towards camps, excursions and some parts of the uniform.

Lifesaving Cadets (Surf Cadets) 

Lifesaving Cadets (Surf Cadets) entered its fifteenth year of operation at Woodvale and caters for students in Years 7, 8, 9, &10. Membership of the cadet group will be capped at 60 for this year. There are currently positions still available. 


Lifesaving Cadets operates each Tuesday from 3.10pm to 5.00pm. 


There is no charge for membership of the Surf Cadets, although there will be a nominal charge for camps and excursions. Cadets are offered the chance to attend at least one camp and one day excursion per year.  


Activities included in the Surf Cadet Program include 

  • Swim stroke Development, Beach Safety & Hazard Identification, Wave identification, Body Surfing, Body Boarding, Paddle Boarding and Stand Up Surfing. 
  • Campcraft and camp cooking, CPR certificate, Co-operation games 


The aims of the Surf Cadets are as follows: 

    1. To increase the Aquatic competencies of cadets.
    2. To develop the Aquatic environmental recreational skills of the cadets. 
    3. To participate in a CPR course
    4. To develop leadership and co-operation skills amongst cadets.
    5. To develop an appreciation of our Aquatic and Land environments.
    6. To foster an appreciation for the need to conserve our environment.
    7. To promote the values of community understanding and serviceamongst cadets.  
    8. To promote the achievements of Surf cadets at Woodvale Secondary College.
